The term has often been interchangable with "pareo" in modern popular culture, but each have separate and defining origins.

Wouldn't you rather have an authentic Tahitian Pareo?

Sarongs originated from Java and Malaysia. Decorating the fabric used usually entails a method called "batik" which involves a unique dying process involving applying melted wax in a desired design and hand dipping the fabric in vegetal dyes. The wax resists the dye and a pattern remains once removed. Batik is a method that has been passed down at least 1,000 years from generation to generation. Many of today's sarongs also feature dainty tassles on the edges. Authentic Tahitian pareos do not have this feature.
